Holistic and fundamental surfcoaching

Maybe it all about accepting what is? When you get hold down underwater you can’t control what’s happening, you need to learn to surrender and just let it happen. Sounds easy, but it’s something a lot of surfers struggle with while actually being held under and realising you have zero control.

Good thing is: you can improve your breathing and swimming technique to be more skillfull, which will help you feel more confident and make it easier to surrender.

Fear often come from a lack of knowledge and the right tools. ⚒️

For those who grew up by the ocean, it’s all second nature—you don’t even think about it. But if you didn’t, you might have missed out on learning the basics:

💡
What should you do when a big wave heads your way? How do you prepare?
How do you dive under a wave, and how deep should you go?
What exactly is current, and where are they? How do I find them?
What do you do if you lose your board out there? how do you get in and out safely?

Understanding these things helps you question your fears. Is that 6-foot wave really going to kill you? Will the current really make you drown? Are the chances of hitting your head on a rock as big as you think?

⚠️ The real danger isn’t the fear itself; it’s letting panic take control. When you lose control of your mind and breath, that’s when things can turn dangerous. The more you feed those scary thoughts, the more likely you are to panic when something unexpected happens. But with knowledge, you can reason through your fears and stick to your plan when things get tough.

Sometimes, all it takes is one positive experience in a situation far outside your comfort zone—something that scares the hell out of you. Feel those emotions as they rise, and realize that it was mostly a lack of knowledge that allowed your fear to grow so large.

And slowly, you’ll start to believe in yourself. 🔆

We don’t just teach you what the technique is, we want you to understand “the why” behind it and want you to feel the difference when applying it.
Together we will make a plan, a roadmap to improve your surfing: what is your focus now, what is after and what are you working towards?

With as main goal: that you feel equipped & confidence to be independent and go practice by yourself, that you are aware of your bad habits and (with patience) to be able to break through them and become a better surfer.🦋

⏩️ Why do we believe surfskating can improve your surfing?
We agree surfskating isn’t EXACTLY the same as surfing, but our main goal during surfskate sessions is to help you create awareness of your body and how moving your body, body parts and weight, affects the board. When you are creating consciousness around this you start to recognise the feeling of when you’re making mistakes and how it feels when you’re doing it “technically correct”. It’s not just about creating muscle memories, it’s learning how to correct yourself in the moment. 🔧
And that awareness is something that is very helpful in the water: it will increase those moments of “ah, I’m doing this..” or “oh, I felt I should have done that” or “yes, that felt better!” ✔️

As a coach it’s a very powerful tool as it’s faster & more direct to be able to tell your student in the moment what it is they have to focus on. Give key words, say them out loud, to create that awareness in that moment. Something that with surfing would only be possible if you would have headphones connected to your coach. 💡

A lot of it comes from the way we were raised and our childhood memories, as we are programmed since we were kids. The other things that affect it are our experience, physical condition, knowledge and self esteem (the mental game).⚡️

On our recent surf trip we got to experience and discuss this, as we both experienced fear and the waves were definitely out of our comfort zone. The way we reacted to it was different and that’s ok! We were brought up differently and have different surf experience.

Fear = normal.
Especially while surfing.
You’re trying to catch a wall of water that’s coming at you… your instincts will always tell you to get the hell away from it.❗️

Be patient & compassionate with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with anyone. You’re doing your best and doing it at your own pace. Listen to yourself, and don’t let others push you too much.
But there’s a thin line, as some people (including myself) might need the push (I would say only of the people you really trust as they know how you surf), to do get out of that comfort zone and believe in yourself.

This is as much a note to you, as to myself, as I really struggled on our trip with my fear. The waves were big, steep, close to the rocks, barrelling, super powerful. I struggled with the crowd who was way more experienced and confident than me. I compared myself, my confidence got worse, I talked myself down, I even thought about changing sport 🤣. I did all the things that I normally tell my students not to do. 🤪

All that to say: the fear never disappears, it just changes. Embrace it and surf it! ✌️

Remember that “wiping out” is part of the process, it means you’re trying new things, you’re getting out of your comfort zone. Most important is being able to analyse why you did you wipe out, so you can learn from it. It’s easy to get frustrated and start punishing yourself, “im terrible, I can’t surf…” -I’m sure you’ve been in that headspace before-

Instead try to see look at it with curiosity, see it as a learning opportunity; what is happening? Why is it happening? And how can you change it?

And then even more important: enjoy the little moments that you surprise yourself, the little improvements you feel you make, the happy moments! ✨

Often our fears come from a lack of information and tools. ⚠️
For people who grew up at the ocean it’s so natural, they never even think about any of it. But if you didn’t, you might have never been taught:

What to do when a big wave comes at you?
How to prepare for that?
How do you dive under a wave?
How deep do you need to dive?
What is a current?
Where are the currents?
How do you use the currents in your favor?
What do you do when you loose your board out there?
How to get in and out safely?

Knowing more, will help you while questioning your fears.  It that 6ft white water really gonna kill you?  Are you really gonna drown because the current will take you?
Are the chances you hit your head on a rock really as big as you think?

It’s not the fear itself that’s the danger, it’s when you panic and loose control over your mind & breath that could kill you in any situation. ⚠️
The more you feed those scary thoughts, the more likely you’re gonna get into panic mode when something unexpected happens.
But the more knowledge you have, the more you can be reasonable about your fears, and you will be able to act up on your plan when something unexpected happens.

Sometimes all you need is a good experience in a situation that’s completely out of your comfort zone and scares the hell out of you. 💥 Feel all the emotions that come up while facing those fears, and realize that it was mostly a lack of knowledge that gave your mind the space to make the fear way bigger than necessary.  And slowly you will start to believe in yourself.

For people who grew up at the ocean it’s so natural, they never even think about any of it. But if you didn’t, you might have never been taught:

What to do when a big wave comes at you?
How to prepare for that?
How do you dive under a wave?
How deep do you need to dive?
What is a current?
Where are the currents?
How do you use the currents in your favor?
What do you do when you loose your board out there?
How to get in and out safely?

Knowing more, will help you while questioning your fears.  It that 6ft white water really gonna kill you?  Are you really gonna drown because the current will take you?
Are the chances you hit your head on a rock really as big as you think?

It’s not the fear itself that’s the danger, it’s when you panic and loose control over your mind & breath that could kill you in any situation. ⚠️
The more you feed those scary thoughts, the more likely you’re gonna get into panic mode when something unexpected happens.
But the more knowledge you have, the more you can be reasonable about your fears, and you will be able to act up on your plan when something unexpected happens.

Sometimes all you need is a good experience in a situation that’s completely out of your comfort zone and scares the hell out of you. 💥 Feel all the emotions that come up while facing those fears, and realize that it was mostly a lack of knowledge that gave your mind the space to make the fear way bigger than necessary.  And slowly you will start to believe in yourself.

It might not be about how long can you hold your breath. Maybe you don’t know how to float in the water, breath & find your peace. When you’re able to let go, and just relax, you get into a meditative state of mind, where nothing else matters but you, breathing & letting go of everything around you. 🪼

This is an important piece of learning how to wipe out: feeling so comfortable in the water you can just relax & let go. If you ever had a traumatic experience in the water or you just don’t have a lot of experience in the ocean, the “washing machine” can really make you panic.
Doing simple exercises like these will help you teach your body that the water can be a safe place too. 💎

So cool to see @lexidcross ‘s surfskate progression. She used to say that she was too scared to skate, and look at her cruising in the bowl now. 👏

After learning the basics, how to get on & off in a safe way, basic posture,how to turn, we’ve been focussing more on how to generate speed by using shifting your weight, compression/decompression & arm movement. It has really been helpful for her surfing to understand how to use the wave to generate speed & improve her basic stance. ⚡️

Learning to duckdive correctly is probably one of the best gifts you can give yourself as a shortboarder. It’s a a big step in your confidence & fear control. When you no longer have to worry about what to do with your board, but just hold on no matter what & it will bring you back up. 🐳

In this lesson your learn in 1h the correct technique in the pool. After you’ll need to practice by yourself in the white water.
Even if you’re not on a shortboard (yet), it’s a fun skill to learn on the side. At some point after practicing lots, you will be able to duckdive the board you surf.

SURFING YOUR FEARS 💧

We had an amazing surfcoaching week with @oowooj .
It was amazing to watch her progress & gain confidence. Her dedication, motivation & passion for surf was a joy to work with.🙌

Woojoo contacted us because she was looking for a surf camp that could help her with her surf & her fear. The first day we paddled out, after we got 1 set on the head, we went straight back to the beach… She never had learned how to swim under waves & how to breath properly in the water, which explained immediately why she was so scared in the water & why she would panic.

So we took her back to the pool and worked on the fundamentals of how to dive, breath & hold your breath properly. With Apnea coach @pacayafreedivingsv they were able to dive deeper into how to relax in & under water and master the breath to be able to improve long capacity. 🌬️
The days after we spend in the white water, back to basics & getting comfortable with the hold downs & being “in the washing machine”. Some surfskate to work on basic posture & how to turn. To get used to committing to the speed & feel the fear but do it anyways.

⚡️After 5 days:
She was able to paddle out at the point, on her own, in 2-4ft waves and caught 3 waves by herself!
She got some 6-7ft waves on the head and stayed calm.
She went from an 8ft board to a 6’8 and learned to duckdive on a shortboard.

Her fears were mainly a lack of information and missing tools. 💡 This improved immediately after rebuilding the foundation.

We can’t wait to hear about how she puts everything in practice at her home break. 🙌
